The common dentex is one of the most prized predators of the Mediterranean: powerful, wary and tied to rocky bottoms, banks and wrecks. Bottom fishing for it demands patience, fresh bait and a rig that withstands its runs back to cover.
At the heart of ForecastX is an advanced marine-weather engine: it analyses waves, wind, sea temperature, tides, pressure and moon in real time and turns them into a Productivity Index (0-100) for every species. You'll always know, precisely, when the sea is on your side.
Coming soon to the App Store and Google Play — don't miss it.Bottom fishing lets you present the bait right on the structures where dentex hunts. It's vertical fishing where sensitivity on the take and quick reaction in the first phase of the fight matter, when the dentex tries to bolt back into the rock.
A sensitive bottom rod with backbone, a strong reel with good drag, 0.18–0.25 mm braid. A 0.40–0.60 mm fluorocarbon leader with one or two hooks (1/0–4/0 depending on size). Weight matched to the current to stay in contact with the bottom.
Find banks, ledges and wrecks with the sounder and drop the bait close to the structure. Bait with whole squid, sardine strip or shrimp, presented naturally. On the take don't strike at once: the dentex tastes first, then runs hard. On the run, apply firm pressure to pull it away from cover.
Thin leaders the dentex cuts on the rock; a drag too tight on the run that breaks off; old bait a wary predator ignores. Don't let it get back into cover: the first seconds of the fight are decisive.
The warm season, from late spring to autumn, with warmer water; dawn and dusk are the most productive windows over the banks.
Whole squid, sardine strip and shrimp are the most effective; the dentex rewards fresh bait and natural presentations.
Strong 0.40–0.60 mm fluorocarbon with 1/0–4/0 hooks: the dentex is powerful and heads straight for the rock, thin leaders cut through.
